Episode 12 / Chapter 8 Part 1 / TURN of the BLADE / Book 1: The Fairy Lore of Ghost Horse Hollow

November 22, 2020

In the heart of the forest north of Ghost Horse Hollow, sixteen-year-old Panther MacKennon realizes she is lost on the Snake Skin Stairs, a mossy and dangerous region inhabited by Moss Trolls and the opossum trader who serves them. Elestial's Opal Moon, Panther's white mare, throws her rider and wanders up the stairs in search of the girl.

Without her Ghost Horse, Panther tumbles down a small waterfall, rapidly losing feeling in her extremities, due the Autumn Fairy Prince's poison dart. A drippy and hungry moss troll named Gooshy discovers the injured girl in a chilly pool of water.

After demanding that her mate fetch her mesh bag to scoop up Panther for dinner, the she-troll spies Panther's deadly wound. Having administered the antidote of Cat Root, Gooshy accidentally empowers the girl to regain her strength. Determined to free herself, Panther launches a plan to escape the moss troll's slippery lair.

Episode 11 / Conclusion of Chapter 7 / TURN of the BLADE / Book 1: The Fairy Lore of Ghost Horse Hollow

October 4, 2020

Panther MacKennon risks a daring escape from the Dead Oak Tree on her brave mare Elestial's Opal Moon. Tormac, the treacherous Autumn Fairy Prince, pierces her shoulder with a poison dart just as the horse leaps across the coyote fire pit. Under the billowing Cloak of Wheels, Panther is wounded. The sixteen-year-old disappears into the forest, uncertain of her ability to survive Tormac's poison.

Jake sends Aaron Ray and Bugle and Bell, the metalsmith's Blue Tick hounds, to knock Three Toe the Bear out of the way from destroying Tormac. The Prince, pinned to the Dead Oak Tree by the men's axes, catches fire when Three Toe lashes out and scatters flaming ashes on the Autumn Fairy Prince's wings. The bear snatches up his Fairytale book and heads for home.

Jake, Aaron, and White Hand fan out to search for Panther in the woods. Tormac calls his deadly minions, the Rough Throat Brothers, to his side as he drops from the Dead Oak Tree. Revenge is in the wind and the chase is on!

Episode 10 Japanese Fairy Tale: The Eight Headed Serpent

August 9, 2020

Long ago the generous God Susano walks beside the River Hi looking for living beings. Discouraged, he decides to return to heaven. He lays down to sleep alongside the river in a bamboo thicket and dreams of rescuing a beautiful maiden from a greedy water monster. When the God awakes the next morning, a single chopstick floats down the river, prompting him to pursue his journey.

As Susano continues his walk, he meets a weeping old man, his wife, and their brave daughter Niko near the riverbank. The family is waiting for an eight headed serpent to come down the river in the spring and gobble up their last remaining daughter.

Susano helps the family devise a plan to rescue Niko from the terrible fate that has already destroyed her seven elder sisters. With good, steaming soup and a very sharp sword, Susano saves the day and takes Niko for his heavenly bride.

"The Eight Headed Serpent" appears in Teresa Peirce Williston's Japanese Fairy Tales, First Edition, printed in 1904.

This version is an original retelling of the ancient tale for My Family Book Nook Podcast.

July 21, 2020

Farmer Jake MacKennon sits down to gamble with Tormac, the treacherous Autumn Fairy Prince, under the Dead Oak Tree north of Ghost Horse Hollow. With his daughter, sixteen-year-old Panther MacKennon, serving as a fairy translator in the tricky game of Roll and Count, Jake hopes to win back Three Toe the Bear's precious fairytale book. Tormac rolls the dice for Panther's magic Cloak of Wheels.

Surprising everyone, Aaron Ray, the homestead's metalsmith, volunteers to play instead. When Aaron flips over the card with the 10th Weasel painted on its back, the game erupts into a dangerous sword duel between Jake and Tormac. The 10th Weasel calls for an instant sacrifice, and Tormac chooses Panther.

Jake helps Panther up into her saddle, but Elestial's Opal Moon bolts into the forest after the horse is attacked by Old Spit the Coyote. Meanwhile, Aaron and Jonas White Hand, the Native American tracker, pin Tormac to the Dead Oak Tree with their axes, saving Jake's life.

Episode 4 BEOWULF / Old English Epic Poem / 1921 Retelling

Episode 4 BEOWULF / Old English Epic Poem / 1921 Retelling

May 2, 2020

Ancient and powerful, Beowulf is one of the earliest examples of an epic poem in Anglo Saxon, or Old English literature. Listening to this Scandinavian adventure with a great warrior and a troubled King, beset by the terrifying and destructive monster Grendel and his vengeful mother, is a heart-stirring oral tradition.

Beowulf depicts a Nordic hero in the 6th or 7th Century AD who journeys from Geatland, the land of the Goths, in what is now modern Sweden, to the Hall of Heorot (or Stag) in Daneland.

The unique manuscript or original copy of Beowulf survives today in the British Library as part of the Nowell Codex composed approximately between 975 - 1025 AD. The author is anonymous. Beowulf is one of the essential foundations for the study of world literature.

My Family Book Nook's version is from a 1921 collection of children's short stories and epic poems edited by Olive Beaupre Miller.
